27th August 2009
Gawker – The arbitrator in the case of sushi-loving Jeremy Piven versus the Broadway producers of Speed-the-Plow ruled today that the producers could not prove their breach of contract suit against the star. But they still think they were right.

Look at the striking similarities between the male burglar in both break-ins — down to the hat and t-shirt. Law enforcement sources tell us they have noticed the similarities and are looking into the possibility that the burglars in both cases are one and the same.
And the M.O. is also strikingly similar — in both cases the thieves entered through unlocked doors

CNN – The Hollywood actors are among the top 10 celebrity searches online that can lead to computer problems, according to a report released Tuesday by the computer security company McAfee.
The company named Biel the “most dangerous celebrity in cyberspace.” One in five Internet searches for terms related to “Jessica Biel” leads to a Web page, photo, video or piece of spam that contains a cyber-security threat, the report said.
The former “7th Heaven” star and girlfriend of singer Justin Timberlake is followed on the “most dangerous” list by singer Beyonce, actress Jennifer Aniston and football hunk Tom Brady. Singer and reality TV star Jessica Simpson rounds out the top five.
Pitt, who topped last year’s list, moved down to 10th.
The report shows that hackers use pop culture trends to spread viruses and malicious software, said Shane Keats, a research analyst at McAfee.
Biel is “very, very popular right now, so it says to me that the cyber criminals really do know who’s hot and who’s not,” Keats said. “They really are smart. They can spot a trend as well as anyone else can — as well as Paris Hilton can.”
The global community has made a “G.I. Joe” sequel a sure thing. Thanks, world. Thanks a lot
24th August 2009
io9 – Apparently, pre-release fears about GI Joe being too America-centric were way off the mark; two weeks after its release, it’s still the #1 movie internationally, even as it tumbles down the US charts.
Variety reports the somewhat surprising news that Joe had grossed $91.6 million internationally by this time last week, almost matching the movie’s US take of $98.6 million, something which, according to studio Paramount, is definitely a strong enough base from which to launch a franchise. Think about that next time someone complains about US cultural imperialism.

Tribune to sell Cubs, Wrigley to Ricketts family
21st August 2009
Chicago Sun Times – Tribune Co. at last made it official today — it has sold the Chicago Cubs to the Ricketts family.
The company said the deal was for $845 million and allows Tribune to retain a 5 percent ownership stake. Company boss Sam Zell used the retention of a small interest to reduce taxes from the sale.
The sale includes Wrigley Field and Tribune’s 25 percent interest in Comcast SportsNet Chicago.
Closing on the sale still requires consents from Major League Baseball and the federal bankruptcy court.
Tribune is in bankruptcy and negotiating with lenders over a $13 billion debt load. How the proceeds of the Cubs sale will be handled will be decided at future hearings.
LA Times – According to a spokesperson for the Halcyon Co., the following are not amongst its creditors: Christian Bale, Franchise Tax Board, GRIN, Paul Haggis, Internal Revenue Service, Latham & Watkins, Dan Lin, McG, Mario Kassar Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, Motion Picture Assn. of America, Bahman Naraghi, Randy Paul, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Sitrick and Co., Universal Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca and Fischer.
Three companies belonging to Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, owners of the “Terminator” franchise rights and producers of May’s “Terminator Salvation,” have filed for bankruptcy just a day after the duo sued their investors for allegedly pushing them into a series of bad business decisions and placing what they claim is an illegal lien on their property.
Even though the movie has sold a healthy $370 million worth of tickets around the world and has yet to be released on DVD and in other post-theatrical markets, Anderson and Kubicek were unable to make a payment demanded by Santa Barbara hedge fund Pacificor, which financed their $30-million purchase of the “Terminator” rights and loaned $9 million for other operating expenses.

The guys who have written the last few Saw films made The Collector. This does not bode well for The Collector. Of the people in the cast, the biggest star is the third-billed lead on a show low on the ratings totem pole. This does not bode well for The Collector. The director of this film’s best contribution to the world of cinema was in co-writing Feast. This does not bode well for The Collector. The trailer seems to be selling a film totally geared around creating a new horror franchise by combining elements of Saw with other serial killer films and by having a villain with a signature mask. This does not bode well for The Collector. The person playing the title character has the birth name Juan de Jesus Fernández de Alarcon. This does not bode well for The Collector or the INS. The tagline for the film is I fuck your eyes with bad movie. This does not bode well for The Collector.
